Online Course Management Software

The University of Memphis utilizes an online course management system called Desire 2 Learn (D2L). We commonly refer to it as eCourseware (for UM Online courses) or eLearn (for RODP online courses).

Minimum Hardware and Software Requirements

The following is a list of the minimum requirements for the Desire2Learn version 10.0. Some courses will have more advanced requirements. Information on advanced requirements may be found in each course syllabus.

PC users

  • Processor: Pentium III 500 MHz recommended
  • Operating System: Windows XP, Vista, or 7
  • Ram: 2GB or higher recommended
  • Internet connection: DSL or Broadband
  • Browser: Recommended - Latest version of Firefox, or Internet Explorer 9.  (Internet Explorer 10 has compatibility issues and is not recommended)
  • Audio: soundcard and speakers for embedded audio files in PowerPoint or flash
  • Input Device: CD-ROM (CD/DVD recommended)

Mac users

  • Processor: G4 or G5.
  • Operating System: Mac OS X (Lion 10.7 or higher)
  • Ram: 2GB or higher recommended
  • Free disk space: minimum of 100MB recommended
  • Internet connection: DSL or Broadband
  • Browser: Latest version of Firefox
  • Audio: soundcard and speakers for embedded audio files in PowerPoint or flash
  • Input Device: CD-ROM (CD/DVD recommended)

General Software/Plug-in Recommendations

Instructors generally recommend that students use Microsoft Word for papers and assignments. This program offers the greatest common denominator in terms of sending documents across different platforms. Sometimes, specific courses will have specific recommendations about software. See your course syllabus for specifics about required software.
