Award Winners for Faculty Convocation 2008

Alumni Association Distinguished Teaching Award
Lily Afshar

Professor Afshar graduated with a Bachelor of Music and a Master of Music degree in guitar performance from The Boston Conservatory and the New England Conservatory of Music. At Florida State University, she became the first woman in the world to gain a Doctorate of Music in guitar performance. Today, Dr. Afshar heads the guitar program at our Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music. England’s Musical Opinion magazine praised her for her “fresh sense of programming” and “her ability to draw listeners to the edge of their seats.” She has built her reputation not only for her concert performances, but for expanding the contemporary classical repertoire. This, her director writes “exposes her students to a diverse literature of music they would not otherwise learn to appreciate or study”. The 2000 recipient of the Board of Visitors Eminent Faculty Award, Dr. Afshar has produced four CDs, including her most recent in 2006, Hemispheres.
