Thomas W. Briggs Foundation Excellence in Teaching Award Fred Albertson
Dr. Fred Albertson received his BA in History and Classical Civilization at the
University of California, Irvine and his MA and PhD in Classical and Near Eastern
Archaeology at Bryn Mawr College. Dr. Albertson teaches a variety of courses, from
“Introduction to Art,” to upper-division classes in Greek and Roman art and graduate
seminars in art historical methodologies. He is a previous recipient of the University
of Memphis Distinguished Teaching Award and the Faculty Advisor Award from the College
of Communication and Fine Arts. In 2002 Professor Albertson was honored by the National
Association for General and Liberal Studies with their Distinguished Faculty Award,
citing his commitment to curriculum development and the General Education program
at the University of Memphis.
His published works have appeared in journals and monographs not only in the United
States, but also in Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Sweden, and Syria. He served
as the Margo Tytus Visiting Scholar in the Department of Classics at the University
of Cincinnati in 2004. Dr. Albertson was the recipient of the Rome Prize, the Post-Doctoral
Fellowship in Classical Studies and Archaeology at the American Academy in Rome in
1995-1996.
