Alumni Association Award for Distinguished Research and Creative Achievement Dr. Paul Bodin
Dr. PAUL BODIN, an associate professor of geophysics and assistant research professor
in the Center for Earthquake Research and Information, is the award winner in the
sciences, engineering and math category.
Dr. Bodin’s research is rooted in understanding the science that underlies seismic
hazard—particularly in slowly deforming regions like the New Madrid seismic zone.
He is currently investigating how to predict ground motions from possible future large
earthquakes. At present Dr. Bodin is comparing ground motions from western India—site
of the largest modern continental intraplate earthquake, for which he led the U of
M’s aftershock study effort—with ground motions from New Madrid. He is also studying
the development of a new technique to monitor ground motions using satellite-based
GPS observations, is investigating the Denali, Alaska, earthquake of 2001, and is
deeply involved in planning for the Mid-South implementation of NSF’s Earthscope program
that will direct geoscience research efforts in the US for the next decade.
This research has led to publications in prestigious journals such as Science, Nature,
and Journal of Geophysical Research.
The external reviewers were very enthusiastic. One characterized Dr. Bodin’s research
as “[leading] to significant advances.” Other comments include: “He is one of the
rare earth scientists who combine excellent field work (both geological and instrumental)
with quantitative analysis of the data.” He “has successfully integrated his research
to form new insights into earthquake mechanics. . . .He is completely unselfish in
his willingness to collaborate with others.”
Dr. Bodin, an associate professor of earth sciences, has been at the University
for 9 years. He earned his doctorate at the University of Colorado-Boulder in 1992.
Congratulations, DR. BODIN.
