Distinguished Teaching Award Dr. Robert J. Frankle
Dr. Frankle has a long and outstanding record of teaching at The University of Memphis.
He joined the University in 1970 with a B.A. from St. Olaf College and an M.A. and
Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin. From the beginning Dr. Frankle has established
himself as a great classroom teacher with a deep commitment to the students. Jack
Hurley, Chair of the History Department, notes: “Dr. Frankle is not only a fine teacher,
he is concerned about the quality of undergraduate instruction. He takes departmental
responsibilities willingly and carries them out conscientiously.”
From 1987 to 1991 Dr. Frankle directed the University’s General Education Committee
and he has remained involved in General Education every since. He is currently serving
on the Undergraduate Task Force, looking at undergraduate programs in the University.
With fourteen articles and book chapters in refereed publications, Dr. Frankle has
not neglected research and he has directed both M.A. and Ph.D. students. However,
his abiding interest has been undergraduate education.
Dr. Frankle has won the Distinguished Teaching Award once before, in 1980, and has
been nominated virtually every year. He is a model teacher, leader, advisor, and educator.
Congratulations, DR. FRANKLE.
