Distinguished Teaching Award Dr. Ladrica C. Menson-Furr
Dr. Menson-Furr, a graduate of LSU, joined the faculty as an instructor in 2000
and received an assistant professor appointment in 2003. In a department of excellent
teachers, Dr. Menson-Furr, who teaches American literature and African-American literature,
has consistently received exceptionally high student evaluations. In fact, Dr. Menson-Furr
has already won a teaching award from the African American Student Association on
our campus.
According to Stephan Tabachnick, Chair of the English Department, Dr. Menson-Furr
richly deserves this award because “she cares deeply about students and is always
a willing participant in all matters involving them and the department.” Dr. Menson-Furr’s
students and colleagues recognize her as a student-centered teacher who has the ability
to maintain high standards in her classes. She also knows how to choose the best texts
for engaging the students’ attention, and how to present them in such a manner as
to hold their attention with stimulating ideas and discussion.
Perhaps even more striking are student comments about her teaching: “One of the
best instructors I’ve had at the University”; “Taking this course has enriched my
life!” We are delighted, but not surprised that, at the beginning of what promises
to be a wonderful pedagogical and research career, Dr. Ladrica Menson-Furr is being
recognized with the Distinguished Teaching Award.
Congratulations, DR. MENSON-FURR.
