Distinguished Advising Award Sharon Guffin
Ms. Sharon Guffin has served as Academic Counselor in the Academic Advising Center
at the University of Memphis since 1996, where she advises undeclared undergraduate
students on course and major selections. Each of the advisors in that Center serves
as the primary advisor to over 300 students each year. For her work in the Center,
she received the distinguished administrative/professional employee of the year award
in 2000 and the University of Memphis Outstanding Customer Service Award the same
year. In addition to her normal duties, Ms. Guffin has been active in a number of
other programs to engage our students including the peer mentor program, our first-year
seminar for academic success ACAD 1100, the Kappa Delta Pi honor society in education,
and outreach programs to area high-schools to promote and encourage post high-school
education; and well as in other initiatives at our university such as the multi-cultural
committee and the Memphis in May Student Affairs Conference (MIMSAC).
Colleagues and students are effusive in their praise of Ms. Guffins work with our
undergraduate students and her concern for them as individuals. The letters she sends
to them when they receive an honor are just one of the above and beyond touches
that they notice and make them feel a part of a community at the University of Memphis.
She is an outstanding example of a caring professional advising staff at the University
of Memphis who play such an important role in the academic and personal success of
students at our University. She is a deserving winner of the 2004 Distinguished Advising
Award.
Congratulations, MS GUFFIN.
