Alumni Association Distinguished Teaching Award Charles Hall
Dr. Hall joined the University of Memphis in 1984 with a Ph.D. from the University
of Florida. He has taught traditional, intensive, and online courses for the university
on campus and in China and the Czech Republic, where this summer he will coordinate
the 17th annual 'Teaching English as a Foreign Language' program. In addition to publications,
he has led workshops in his research interests, legal English, materials development,
and teacher training, in countries around the world for the U.S. Department of State
and the United Nations. Professor Hall won a previous Distinguished Teaching Award
in 1989.
Dr. Steve Tabachnick, Chair of the English Department, notes that 'Dr. Hall’s outstanding
qualities as a teacher are his congeniality, his first-hand knowledge of cross-cultural
linguistic situations, and his immense international experience, all of which make
it possible for him to offer out students first-class knowledge of the world outside
of the United States and the role of the English language in that world.'
