Alumni Association Distinguished Achievement in the Creative Arts Award
Stephen Hancock
Professor Hancock is a well-known and successful theatre director. His work has been
produced at the University of Memphis, Playhouse on the Square, Theatre Memphis, Circuit
Playhouse and the Oklahoma Shakespeare Festival. Professor Hancock was the recipient
of the 2007 Ostrander Award (formerly Memphis Theatre Awards) for best director. Dr.
Bob Hetherington, chair of the Department of Theatre and Dance, comments that Mr.
Hancock’s work on eight plays in the last two years, ”ranging from Shakespeare to
musical theatre to farce to contemporary drama, is both unusual and extraordinary.”
