Excellence in Teaching Award
Stephen W. Hancock

Professor Hancock, a graduate of Pennsylvania State University, joined the faculty in 1998. In the short time he has been at the University of Memphis, Professor Hancock has become central to the undergraduate teaching mission of the department. He is a highly regarding acting teacher, coordinator of the General Education Introduction to Theatre course, an exceptional teacher of playwriting, and a gifted state direction who extends his teaching into the rehearsal room and on stage.

Bob Hetherington, Chair of the Department, notes that Professor Hancock �creates an environment of trust where students are motivated, challenged, and enjoy what they are doing. Risk taking is encouraged. Bold choices are expected. Seeing where a journey ends is highly prized. He challenges his students to find answers, formulate opinions and actively encourages their comments and feedback.�

Professor Hancock�s teaching skills are not limited to the classroom. He also advises and mentors students so effectively that he was awarded the CCFA Dean�s Faculty Advisor Award for 2002-2003. He has likewise shown commitment to the undergraduate curriculum by chairing the departmental Undergraduate Policy Manual Committee and by co-authoring the Undergraduate Policy Manual.

Professor Hancock�s impact has been considerable throughout the department and the university. He is a role model for his colleagues and students alike.
