Distinguished Achievement Award
Robert Hetherington
As chair of the Department of Theatre and Dance, Hetherington has been a productive
and acclaimed director at both the University and in the Memphis community. He has
directed shows not only at the U of M, but also at Playhouse on the Square, Theatre
Memphis and Opera Memphis, including four successive productions at each of these
venues in one season. His productions have won numerous awards for direction, acting
and design, including those for Parade and Inherit the Wind. Hetherington is affiliated
with the prestigious Stratford Shakespeare Festival in Canada, and was in residence
at the Shaw Festival of Canada in 2005. He has had several essays published in the
Shaw journal Pshaw!
