Social Sciences and Business Dr. Douglas Imig
Dr. Douglas Imig, associate professor in the political science department, is being
recognized for achievement in the social sciences and business.
Dr. Imig, a graduate of Duke University , earned his doctorate in Political Science
in 1991. He has been a Visiting Scholar and Research Associate at Harvard University
and has established a national and international reputation. He has served as the
Director of the Benjamin Hooks Institute, and has received the outstanding book award
from the Gustavus Myers Center for the Study of Human Rights in 1997, and the 2004
University of Memphis College of Arts and Sciences Distinguished Research Award.
Dr. Imig's central research and teaching interest concerns the development of political
voice by marginalized and silent constituencies. To that end, he has focused on social
movements, nonprofit and community advocacy, and citizen participation in the U.S.
and Western Europe.
His current projects include “The American Children's Movement,” which investigates
the ways in which children become politically salient in the United States, and the
ways that activists and advocates respond to political opportunities in their efforts
to advance political agendas for children, and “The Europeanization of Social Movements,”
(with Sidney Tarrow), which offers a cross-national and longitudinal analysis of trends
in social movement responses to European integration.
Congratulations, Dr. Imig.
