Alumni Association Distinguished Teaching Award Nancy H. Mardis
Professor Mardis joined the Fogelman College of Business and Economics faculty full-time
in 1989. A graduate of the University of Oklahoma with a BA degree in journalism and
a MA in public administration, she received her Juris Doctorate in 1980 from then
Memphis State University.
In addition to teaching business law and the legal environment of business courses,
Professor Mardis has taught ACAD, the introduction to the university course for freshmen,
and regularly teaches personal financial management. A former law clerk for the chief
bankruptcy judge for the Western District of Tennessee, she has focused her research
on bankruptcy law, while also publishing on environmental, tort, insurance and real
estate law. Dr. Kenneth Lambert, Chair of the School of Accountancy, notes that 'the
single-most important characteristic of Professor Mardis is a genuine concern for
her students. She cares whether they learn and is sensitive to their individual needs.
Her students seek her out on a regular basis for assistance and guidance outside of
the classroom and she is a valuable resource to them.'
