Alumni Association Excellence in Engaged Scholarship Award Dorothy Norris-Tirrell
Since her arrival at the University in 1993, Dr. Norris-Tirrell has successfully
fulfilled the criteria for scholarship that engages and serves the community. She
has served as a leader with the Mid-South American Humanics Collaborative, helping
nonprofit employees such as Volunteer Memphis and Boys and Girls Clubs of Memphis.
She has trained over 300 volunteers to serve as nonprofit board members through Board
Connection using curriculum she designed. She provides information to over 600 Mid-South
nonprofit leaders through CONNECT!, a quarterly e-newsletter she created. She has
also worked with United Way of Mid-South developing assessment and accountability
systems.
Dr. Norris-Tirrell has 30 refereed publications, more than 35 conference presentations,
and over $450,000 in grant and contract funding. Students and other faculty have actively
participated in her research.
Dr. Norris-Tirrell does not simply perform research in the community; she actively
and successfully performs engaged scholarship within the community.
