Distinguished Research in the Humanities Award Williams H. O'Donnell
Retiring this Spring, Professor O’Donnell has served the University of Memphis for
twenty years, first as Chair of the English Department from 1986 to 1993, and then
as a distinguished member of the faculty. In his main field of scholarship, as a
leading critic and editor of William Butler Yeats—the Irish poet, novelist, and playwright
who is a major figure in international modernist literature—Dr. O’Donnell is internationally
recognized as a skilled and productive scholar of prestige and distinction for his
many conference presentations, articles, and his six major book publications. These
include original critical scholarly readings as well as exemplary scholarly editions
of Yeats’ wide-ranging work that have helped significantly redefine the place and
prestige of this important literary figure.
