Alumni Association Distinguished Research in the Humanities David Patterson
Dr. Patterson, who earned his doctorate in 1978 from The University of Oregon, came
to the University of Memphis in 1996. Between 1996 and 1998 he held the positions
of Distinguished Professor of Russian Literature and Director of the University Honors
Program. In 1998, he was appointed the Bornblum Chair of Excellence and the Director
of Judaic Studies Program.
Dr. Patterson’s research includes several translations of important Russian writings,
and several books arising out of his study of Holocaust novels, memoirs, and diaries.
His writings also include books on the nature of Jewish thought and the challenges
posed for Jewish philosophy and religion in the aftermath of the Holocaust.
One reviewer wrote that Dr. Patterson's work "has made an essential impact on both
the literary and religious studies of the past 30 years.
