Alumni Association Distinguished Teaching Award Stephen J. Scanlan
Dr. Scanlan joined the University of Memphis in 2001 with a Ph.D. from the Ohio
State University. Since then, Dr. Scanlan has taught at both the graduate and undergraduate
level. His courses mirror his research interests in comparative social change, political
sociology and social movements, and social stratification and inequality. He is co-author
of a forthcoming book—Global Inequalities—and has published research articles on hunger,
militarization, and women in development in several journals, including American Sociological
Review.
Dr. Larry Peterson, Interim Chair of the Department of Sociology, describes Dr.
Scanlan as 'a truly outstanding, dedicated teacher' who 'uses a variety of teaching
techniques that actively involve students in their own learning.' No matter what technique
he uses, Dr. Scanlan is highly enthusiastic about course material and he communicates
this enthusiasm to students.
