Distinguished Research in Science, Engineering, and Mathematics Award Joan T. Schmelz
Dr. Schmelz, whose research interests lie in astrophysics, uses diagnostic measurements
derived from X-ray and EUV emission lines to characterize physical conditions—such
as temperature, density, emission measure, and elemental composition—of coronal active
regions. She has developed a strong and federally supported program in astrophysics
at the U of M, has published over 50 scientific papers, and has received many grants,
mainly from NASA and the National Science Foundation. The College of Arts and Sciences
recognized her excellent work by awarding Dr. Schmelz the Dunavant Professorship and
the College of Arts and Sciences Distinguished Research Award in 2004.
