Distinguished Teaching Award Dr. Carolyn I. Speros
Dr. Carolyn Speros is nationally recognized as an expert in the field of patient
and consumer health education. She has worked in the areas of nursing education, nursing
administration and family practice throughout the course of her nursing career. Dr.
Speros has delivered numerous presentations to audiences across the country on topics
related to patient and consumer health education, staff education and competency development,
health promotion, and health literacy. She is currently Assistant Professor of Nursing
at the University of Memphis, and in practice as a Nurse Practitioner in the Memphis
area.
Dr. Speros earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from Vanderbilt University.
She later earned a Masters of Education (MEd) with an emphasis in Health Education
from the University of Memphis, a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) and a Doctor
of Nursing Science (DNSc) from the University of Tennessee, Memphis. She is Board
Certified as both an Adult Nurse Practitioner and Family Nurse Practitioner.
Dr. Speros’ area of research focuses on systems and strategies that promote health
literacy in adult populations. She is currently serving as a consultant on an NIH/NLM
grant to develop a system to facilitate access to low literacy health information
for inner city Medicaid patients in primary care clinics across Memphis.
Dr. Speros began her career in nursing education at Methodist Hospitals of Memphis'
School of Nursing where she designed a patient and family education curriculum for
RN students. Subsequently, she moved into nursing administration at Methodist to set
up and direct the Department of Patient and Community Education. While working in
this capacity, she designed the Learning for Life program of education for patients
which is still in place today. The program was awarded three national awards for hospital-based
patient education by the American Hospital Association. Methodist was the only hospital
in the country ever to receive three of these prestigious awards. Dr. Speros also
designed and developed the Health Promotion program for Methodist Hospitals which
has become a model hospital-based worksite health promotion initiative in the country.
In 1993, Dr. Speros joined the UT Department of Family Medicine as a Nurse Practitioner.
While there, she established a highly successful patient education "clinic within
a clinic" for challenging and non-compliant patients of the practice.
