Excellence in Engaged Scholarship Award James P. Whelan
Dr. Whelan’s scholarship is a decade-long model of engagement with the community
that spans three major areas. His work with the Tennessee Board of Examiners in Psychology
led to revised and improved testing and licensing requirements and strengthened relationships
between academic programs and independent practitioners. Under his directorship, the
university’s Psychological Services Center offers mental health services to hundreds
of area residents who otherwise would not have access to such services. In addition,
Dr. Whelan helped to establish The Institute for Gambling Education and Research on
campus, which has provided counseling to 250 clients and has been the catalyst for
research by Dr. Whelan and students in the Psychology Department.
In all of these areas, Dr. Whelan’s work has had both applied and academic results.
His work has benefited the university, his students, the community in Memphis and
the Mid-South, and the broader scholarly community—truly an engaged scholar.
