              METHODOLOGY COURSE REQUIREMENTS

  1. There are three required courses in the basic sequence:
    • Psyc 7301-8301 Research Design and Methodology
    • Psyc 7302-8302 Advanced Statistics in Psychology I
    • Psyc 7303-8303 Advanced Statistics in Psychology II

  2. The first two of these courses, Psyc 7301-8301 and Psyc 7302-8302, are usually taken during the first year of study. All three of the courses must be completed no later than the student's second year.

  3. In general, it is recommended that the course on research design, Psyc 7301-8301, be completed first. There are both conceptual and practical reasons for this recommendation:

    • First, the research design course provides students with an overview of research methodology, including the role of the statistical procedures taught in the two statistics courses.

    • Second, if students are expected to begin working on a thesis proposal during their first year, they will need to be familiar with design issues taught in the research design course to plan their project before having to use the statistical methods taught in the two statistics courses to analyze their data.

  4. Psychology students should be encouraged to register for these required courses early during the registration period. Because of limited numbers of seats and the popularity of the three courses with students from other departments, students may find the classes full if they wait until later. Although there is a procedure to give last-minute enrollment priority to psychology students, this solution can handle only a small number of cases and may leave a student uncertain of his or her course schedule until just before classes begin.

  5. In addition to the three basic courses, each student must complete an additional methodology course. This course can be one of the following:

    • Psyc 7304-8304 Measurement Theory and Psychometrics
    • Psyc 7305-8305 Quantitative Methods for Reviewing Research
    • Psyc 7306-8306 Linear Structural Modeling
    • Psyc 7307-8307 Models of Program Evaluation
    • Psyc 7308-8308 Applied Multivariate Statistics
    • Psyc 7310-8310 Mixed-Model Regression Analysis
    • Psyc 7311-8311 Applied Categorical Data Analysis
    • Psyc 7312-8312 Introduction to Qualitative Methods in Psychology

Alternatively, the requirement for an additional methodology course can be satisfied by another course approved by the student's major professor and the director of graduate studies.
