On behalf of the Organizing Committee for the 15th Mid-South Psychology Conference
(MSPC), I would like to thank everyone for helping to make the conference a huge success.
Close to 200 individuals took part in the conference.
We would like to express gratitude and appreciation to lots of people:
- A big “shout out” goes to the students who made paper and/or poster presentations.
We heard a lot of complimentary statements about the presentations and commend the
students for taking on the challenge and doing a great job!
- We also thank our invited speakers, including those for the interest sessions (Drs.
Helen Sable, Joanne Gikas, and William Zachry; Marion Powless; and the graduate panel)
as well as Dr. Art Graesser, who brought an excellent lunch hour address.
- We thank the moderators who introduced various speakers and the judges, those who
scored presentations in the competitive category as well as those who provided feedback
for all of the presentations.
- A bouquet of roses must be given to the volunteers who helped with stuffing conference
bags, registration, lunch, parking, scheduling, etc.
- We are most grateful to the University of Memphis for a fine conference facility,
staff and administrators who were committed to making the conference a success. Tigercopygraphics
did an excellent job with our flyers, posters, and program. Another huge “shout out”
to The University Center conference staff who had to expeditiously make adjustments
in our conference rooms and lunches to accommodate us. Our actual attendance was three
times more than we had made arrangements for. Contributions from our Provost (Dr.
Faudree) and Dean of Arts and Sciences (Dr. Kurtz) helped to keep the cost of the
conference at a rate students could afford.
- Finally, we thank Dr. Cheryl Bowers and the other founders for bringing the MSPC to
the mid-south. In doing so, The University of Memphis/Department of Psychology, with
Dr. Frank Andrasik as the Chair, had the honor of hosting this impressive research
conference for undergraduates.

The MSPC is a forum for undergraduate psychology students to present original research.
Participants receive friendly and professional feedback about the research from their
peers, professors, and a panel of judges based on the research project and conference
presentation. For many years, the conference was sponsored and hosted through a rotation
system involving the University of Memphis, Lambuth University (now the University
of Memphis/Lambuth), and Christian Brothers University. This year, we welcome LeMoyne-Owen
College and Rhodes College as partners for the Mid-South Psychology Conference (MSPC).
We also welcome the participation of young people, from local junior college and high
school students, who have expressed an interest in a career in a field related to
psychology. We encourage them to attend the conference as well as submit proposals
(research) for presentation.
Local high school students are also encouraged to submit research and attend the conference.
