Department Welcomes New Chair

Dr. Frank Andrasik has been named chairman of the Department of Psychology.

Prior to coming to the U of M, Andrasik was a distinguished professor of psychology at the University of West Florida, Pensacola and a senior research scientist at the Florida Institute for Human and Machine Cognition.

Andrasik’s research falls within the area of Clinical Health Psychology, focusing most intensively on pain, stress and applied psychophysiology.

When applying for the position at the U of M, Andrasik expressed a desire to become more involved in doctoral training, as the University of West Florida has few such programs. He said, “The chance to help move a prestigious unit forward and to be a part of something much bigger than oneself clearly appeals to me.”

Andrasik is a Fellow in the American Psychological Association, Society of Behavioral Medicine and Association for Psychological Science. He is currently president of the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies, a multidisciplinary society of approximately 5,000 members.

He received his doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Ohio University in 1979 after completing an internship at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic (Department of Psychiatry) at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

Dr. Ron Landis, professor and director of the Industrial-Organizational Psychology area, has been named associate chairman. Landis came to the University of Memphis from Tulane University in 2006. He received his BA in psychology from Pennsylvania State University and his MA and PhD degrees from Michigan State University.
