A
resource center about earthquakes and the New Madrid seismic
zone will open to the public Thursday, May 6, at the University
of Memphis. The Public Earthquake Resource Center (PERC) will
hold a ribbon cutting and grand opening at 1 p.m. at 3892
and 3918 Central Avenue.
There
is no charge to visit the resource center, which features
interactive displays that simulate earthquakes and other earth
processes.
Kicking
off the grand opening will be U of M President Shirley C.
Raines; Dr. Arch Johnston, director of the Center for Earthquake
Research and Information; and Dr. Jill McCarthy, chief research
scientist with the U.S. Geological Survey.
PERC
is an interactive learning center designed to appeal to both
children and adults. A group of fifth graders from the Campus
School will be on hand to explore the center during its grand
opening.
PERC
is funded in part by the Mid-America Earthquake Center based
at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the
U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). PERC houses a branch office
of the USGS that includes two geophysicists and a geologist
conducting joint research with U of M scientists and students.
