Freshmen at the University of Memphis will start their great college adventure this
year with music, school spirit, encouragement, and information. It’s all part of Freshman
Convocation, set for Monday, Aug. 31. The event begins at 2:13 p.m. (in recognition
of the class of 2013) in the Michael D. Rose Theatre.
Participants will learn about U of M traditions and get advice on how to be successful
students. Alumni and current students will offer their strategies on how freshmen
can achieve their ultimate goal – graduation. Speakers will include President Shirley
Raines, Provost Ralph Faudree, Vice President for Student Affairs Rosie Phillips Bingham,
and Tiger basketball head coach Josh Pastner. Entertainment will be provided by the
U of M Pep Band, cheerleaders, and Pouncer, the Tiger mascot.
Following a tradition begun last year, the freshmen class will gather for a group
photo in front of the Administration Building after Convocation. Attendees will receive
an official “Class of 2013” t-shirt to wear.
A Registered Student Organization (RSO) Fair, complete with refreshments, will follow
Freshman Convocation. More than 140 clubs at the University represent and support
athletics, the arts, community service, cultural awareness, religious and political
activism, the college Greek community, and academic scholarship.
