An original design by Nia James, a sixth grader in Dr. Hatcher’s class at the Campus
School at the University of Memphis, was selected for this year’s University holiday
card, which will be sent electronically from the U of M to more than 45,000 alumni,
friends, and constituents around the world.

At a ceremony attended by University President Shirley Raines, the top three contest
winners were announced, as were the top winners from each classroom at the Campus
School. The awards presentation was held at an assembly of all the students, the
faculty, and students’ parents and guests.
Nia received a $200 U.S. savings bond, a bag of University-themed gifts, and her original
artwork professionally matted and framed. Nia is the daughter of Mia and Richard
James of Memphis.
Second place went to Kennedi Rachel, who is in Ms. Prevette’s second grade class.
She received her artwork matted and framed and a $100 U.S. savings bond. She is the
daughter of Kristin Young and Geroy Rachel of Memphis.
Third place was awarded to Kyoko Smith, a first-grader in Ms. McClendon’s class.
She received her artwork matted and framed and a $50 U.S. savings bond. She is the
daughter of Kelly Haney of Memphis.
Second place went to Kennedi Rachel (pictured on left) and third place was awarded
to Kyoko Smith (pictured on right).
