Celebrating Black History

The University of Memphis recognizes Black History Month this February with a full calendar of events. Each year the events enlighten, motivate and inspire the entire U of M community. This year's Black History Month calendar includes a full schedule of pageantry and programs, musical events, and lectures.

Events and dates include:

Award Ceremony Corey Holcomb Prescott Gospel Explosion Kevin Davidson and the Voices Hill Harper

Friday, Feb. 1, Opening Reception & Lifetime Achievement Award Ceremony, 7 p.m., Rose Theatre;

Tuesday, Feb. 5, Readings in the Rotunda, “The Mis-Education of the Negro," 1-2 p.m., Ned R. McWherter Library;

Thursday, Feb. 7, Comedy show featuring Corey Holcomb and Prescott, 7 p.m., Michael D. Rose Theatre;


Tuesday, Feb. 12, Readings in the Rotunda, “I Have a Dream," 1-2 p.m., McWherter Library;

Friday, Feb. 15, Gospel Explosion featuring Kevin Davidson and the Voices, 7 p.m., Rose Theatre;


Monday, Feb. 18, Race relations discussion, 1 p.m., Panhellenic Building;

Tuesday, Feb. 19, Readings in the rotunda, “Film: Low Literacy," 1-2 p.m., McWherter Library; A Frank Discussion with Hill Harper, 7 p.m., Rose Theatre;


Thursday, Feb. 21, Black Scholars United's Igniting Excitement, 3 p.m., Rose Theatre lobby;

Friday, Feb. 22, Freedom Ball and Mahogany Awards, 7-11 p.m., Holiday Inn;



Friday, Feb. 29, Closing Ceremony with featured speaker My Harrison, 1 p.m., Rose Theatre.
