The University of Memphis will host “WordSmith 2010” on Sunday, Feb. 7, in the Psychology Auditorium. The writing competition, which is for students in grades seven through 12, will begin at 1:45 p.m. Students from public and private schools in Memphis and Shelby County are eligible to compete.

WordSmith Tournament Day events test students’ skills in four areas of non-fiction: description, narration, persuasion, and exposition. All students receive the same writing assignment and are judged according to their grade level. The first three events are short “dashes” of 40, 80, and 120 words. Top finishers go on to compete in the main event, the 400-word dash.

Sponsors are the U of M Department of English and the Shelby-Memphis Council of Teachers of English.

More information is available from Cathy Dice, WordSmith director, at 901-678-4535 or cdice@memphis.edu
