WUMR will host its week-long “Jazz in June” Radiothon beginning Sunday, June 13, and
running through Sunday, June 20. Volunteer jazz lovers will take pledges by phone,
while music by jazz greats and new artists entertains listeners. Pledges can be made
by calling locally 901-678-4000 or toll-free 877-955-5299.
Closing out this year’s Radiothon on Sunday, June 20 will be “An Evening of Jazz”
at the Majestic Grille, 145 Main Street in Downtown Memphis. The 6-9 p.m. event, open
to the public via ticket sales, will feature distinguished jazz trumpeter Marvin Stamm.
Also performing will be local jazz artists Alvie Givahn, Tom Lonardo, Lanny McMillan,
and Sam Shupe, as well as Jack Cooper, associate professor of jazz and jazz studies
coordinator at the University of Memphis.
Tickets for “An Evening of Jazz” are $25 in advance and $30 at the door. Advance tickets
are on sale at Davis-Kidd Booksellers (387 Perkins Extended, 901-683-9801) through
June 19. Proceeds from ticket sales will go toward the Bob McDowell Fund, established
in memory of WUMR’s longtime general manager. The fund supports station operations.
WUMR is the only jazz station in the Mid-South. Known as “The Jazz Lover,” the 25,000-watt
station serves listeners within a 60-mile radius of Memphis. Its playlist blends contemporary
and traditional jazz with a touch of fusion, Latin, and New Age music.
WUMR, staffed almost exclusively by students and volunteers, serves the area with
educational, sports, and community-service programming. It functions as a learning
laboratory for students, providing them experience in announcing, news reporting and
writing, talk show hosting, and sportscasting. In addition to on-air positions, students
serve in management roles in various departments, including music, production, traffic,
news, and sports.
More information about WUMR is available from General Manager Malvin Massey, 901-678-2560,
