For release: March 1, 2008
For press information, contact

The University of Memphis Band Alumni Chapter will host its annual high school marching band contest this year on Saturday, October 18.  Known as The Bandmasters Championship, the competition will be held at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium, which is also the home of the University of Memphis Tigers football team.

Proceeds from the event will benefit scholarships for the University of Memphis Band, the Mighty Sound of the South.

Originally known as The Mid-South Invitational, The Bandmasters Championship began in 1963. The Band Alumni Chapter took on responsibility for the event in the 1990s and has hosted marching bands from Tennessee, Mississippi, Arkansas, Kentucky, and Alabama. The 2007 competition, with the help of FOX 13, was televised on WKNO-TV Channel 10, the Memphis public broadcasting station, a number of times.

For more information, contact Greg Nelson, sponsorship/communication coordinator, by phone at 901-233-1844 or via email at gregsnelson1@aol.com
