As part of Women’s History Month, the University of Memphis chapter of Amnesty International
will sponsor a series of activities for Women’s Rights Awareness Week March 23-26.
The events, focused on raising awareness of women’s rights, are free and open to the
public.
Monday, March 23 – AI Cinema Presents: Iron Jawed Angels, 5 p.m., Johnson Hall Auditorium, an HBO film about women fighting for the right to
vote, starring Oscar winner Hilary Swank
Tuesday, March 24 – “Hindered But Not Silenced,” 1-7 p.m., Panhellenic Building, Room 101, a letter writing campaign on behalf of Nobel
laureate Shirin Ebadi and others prosecuted for speaking out for women’s rights and
human rights
Wednesday, March 25 – “The FGM Debate,” 5 p.m., Panhellenic Building Ballroom, a panel discussion, moderated by Dr. David
Richards, on the topic of female genital mutilation
Thursday, March 26 – “The Effects of Violence,” 5-7 p.m., Student Plaza. Deborah Clubb, executive director of the Memphis Area Women’s
Council, will discuss the effects of domestic violence and community resources. The
program will end with a candlelight vigil and moment of silence for victims of domestic
violence.
