Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps Midshipmen and their active duty Naval Science
instructors from around the nation will meet in Memphis on Saturday, March 27, for
the Third Annual Reserve Officer Training Corps Drill Meet, sponsored by the University
of Memphis Naval ROTC.
Approximately 225 students and instructors from eight colleges and universities will
participate. Among the schools sending units are Marquette, South Carolina, Iowa State,
Purdue, Ole Miss, North Georgia, and Savannah State.
Competition will begin at 7:30 a.m. with a physical endurance challenge at Shelby
Farms. The challenge covers more than six miles, including running with logs, sandbags,
and packs; a buddy-carry maneuver course; an ammunition-can maneuver course; a “keep
in memory” game; and pull-ups and sit-ups.
The drill meet will begin at 10 a.m. and last until 2 p.m. on the U of M’s main campus.
Drills will be performed on the Ellipse, just east of the McWherter Library, and on
Memorial Field, just east of the Elma Roane Field House. Both sites are situated along
Zach Curlin on the eastern border of the campus.
An awards ceremony will be held at 3 p.m. in the University Center Theatre.
Drill events will include unit uniform inspection, basic drill and exhibition drill
for platoon and squad, one-man and two-man exhibition drill, and color guard. Judging
criteria include a unit’s overall precision and execution of drill movements, discipline,
confidence, attention to detail, command presence, and knowledge of Naval details.
Area Junior ROTC students are invited to observe the drill meet and meet their college
counterparts and their instructors.
