Southeast Memphis Safety Briefing Set for May 21

The Southeast Memphis Community Development Corporation will host the latest in a
series of community safety briefings Thursday, May 21, at 6 p.m. at the Hickory Hill Community Center, 3910 Ridgeway Road. The meeting is open to
the public, and everybody interested in the future of southeast Memphis is encouraged
to attend.
Residents will be introduced to the new commanders of the Ridgeway and Mt. Moriah
Police Precincts and to Alan Gumbel, interim director of the Southeast Memphis Community
Development Corporation. Beanie Self, retired executive director, also will be recognized.
The briefing will provide residents with Blue CRUSH statistics showing reduced crime
in neighborhoods and announce the JustCare 180 initiative to prevent juvenile crime.
Featured guests will be Col. Jerry Blum of the Ridgeway Precinct; Col. Michael Rallings
of the Mt. Moriah Precinct; Richard Janikowski, director of the University of Memphis
Center for Community and Criminology Research; and Phyllis Betts, director of the
Center for Community Building and Neighborhood Action (CBANA) at the U of M.
This event is part of an ongoing series of community meetings with residents, the
faith community, public agencies, the University of Memphis, and non-profit agencies.
