This year’s annual Bandmasters Championship high school marching band contest will be held Saturday, October 31, at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium.  Hosted by the U of M Band Alumni Chapter, the event funds scholarships for the University of Memphis Band, “The Mighty Sound of the South.”

Originally known as The Mid-South Invitational, The Bandmasters Championship began in 1963. In the 1990's the Band Alumni Chapter took responsibility for the event, which has hosted marching bands from Tennessee, Mississippi, Arkansas, Kentucky, Florida, and Alabama. This year’s competition will feature 29 high school bands, including the 2008 Grand Champion from Munford (Tenn.) High School.

The contest will begin at 11:30 a.m. and conclude at 8:30 p.m. The University of Memphis Band will march in exhibition at 8 p.m.  Gates will open at 10:30 a.m.

The Bandmasters Championship has been designated by the Memphis Music Foundation as an official 2009 Memphis Means Music event.
