The Barbara K. Lipman Early Childhood School & Research Institute at the University of Memphis will host its ninth annual Peace Day Celebration on Monday, Oct. 25. While the activities are planned mainly for the school’s children, their families, and the U of M community, the public also is welcome to attend.

A “Wings of Grace” release of peace doves will take place at 9:15 a.m. at the Leslie Phillipsen Outdoor Classroom. From 9:30 to 1l:30 a.m., each classroom will hold “peaceful” activities, including storytelling, making origami peace cranes, and building a “web of friendship” with twine. In the past, students have formed a peace symbol with their bodies on the playground, created a mosaic table with the Chinese symbols for peace, and fashioned a peace quilt. A multicultural “peace-nic” lunch will follow at 11:45 a.m. in the school’s Pecan Grove.

The Peace Day Celebration grew out of the Lipman School’s long tradition of diversity/anti-bias educational practices. The first multicultural luncheon was held in 1985. After the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, the school re-evaluated its priorities and decided the concepts of peace and justice were at the root of its dreams for a better world. The date was selected to coincide with the birthday of the school’s namesake, Barbara K. Lipman, and United Nations Day.

The Lipman School, located at 3771 Poplar Ave., is the laboratory demonstration early education school for the U of M’s College of Education. It is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children.
