Award-winning poet Ellen Bryant Voigt will be the first guest of the fall 2008 season
of the University of Memphis’ River City Writers Series. On Thursday, Sept. 25. Voigt
will conduct an interview with students at 10:30 a.m. in Patterson Hall, Room 456;
and at 7 p.m., she will read from her work and sign books in the Fogelman Executive
Center, Room 219.
A reception at 6 p.m. will precede the reading. All events are free and open to the
public.
Voigt is the author of several collections of poetry, including Shadow of Heaven,
a finalist for the National Book Award, and Kyrie, a finalist for the National Book
Critics Circle Award. She has received numerous grants and awards, including a Pushcart
Prize. Voigt served as Vermont’s state poet from 1999-2003.
Other writers on the fall River City schedule are popular food writer and journalist
Trevor Corson (Oct. 9-10) and James McBride, bestselling author of The Color of Water
and Miracle at St. Anna (Nov. 10).
The River City Writers Series is sponsored by the U of M English Department, the Creative
Writing Club, Sigma Tau Delta, the Student Activities Council, Academic Enrichment
Funds, Public Service Funds, the Hohenberg Foundation, Deborah Talbot, and Friends
of the University Libraries.
