A hands-on program at the University of Memphis aims to encourage young women to explore
mathematics and science. “Expanding Your Horizons,” for girls in grades 6¬ through
8, will be held Saturday, Sept. 26, from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the Herff College
of Engineering.
The program will feature hands-on workshops in science, healthcare, engineering, computers,
and more. Choices will include a balloon-rocket challenge, designing a house on the
computer, studying heart functions by tracing a drop of blood, and exploring renewable
energy by building a windmill.
Students will have a chance to talk to women professionals about careers in math and
science. There also will be workshops for parents on topics such as educational preparation,
student life, and financial aid.
The keynote speaker will be Audra Bares, project manager, medical affairs, for GTx
Inc.
The registration deadline is Sept. 18. Registration is available online at www.engr.memphis.edu/eyh
The fee for the conference is $12 and includes lunch.

Parking is available in the Central Avenue parking lot or in the garage adjacent to
the Fogelman Executive Center on Innovation Drive, just off Central.
The conference is presented by the Herff College of Engineering and Expanding Your
Horizons Network, with additional support from the American Association of University
Women Memphis Branch, the U of M College of Communication and Fine Arts, and the U
of M’s Center for Research on Women.
