Creative nonfiction writer Robert Root will visit the University of Memphis for two
events in the River City Writers Series on Thursday, Oct. 1. Root will teach a master
class at 2 p.m. in Patterson Hall, Room 456. At 7 p.m. he will read from his work
and sign books in the Mitchell Hall Auditorium. Both events are free and open to the
public.
Root is an authority on the genre of creative nonfiction, having written The Fourth Genre: Contemporary Writers of/on Creative Nonfiction, Landscapes With
Figures: The Nonfiction of Place, and The Nonfictionist’s Guide: On Reading and Writing
Creative Nonfiction. His most recent book is Following Isabella: Travels in Colorado Then and Now. His other works include Recovering Ruth: A Biographer’s Tale and E. B. White: The Emergence of an Essayist.
Root currently is the interview/roundtable editor for Fourth Genre: Explorations in Nonfiction, one of the first journals devoted exclusively to literary nonfiction. He discusses
creative nonfiction at creative writing and English education conferences, and has
been a visiting writer and speaker in writing programs at colleges and universities
around the country.
