The Honors Program provides a living-learning community in Richardson Towers that
gives first-year and upper-class students an opportunity to take classes, participate
in social activities, and live with other academically talented students. Students
take core interdisciplinary honors classes together throughout their first year. Because
all first-year students have common classes and a shared living environment, a strong
learning community is created. First-year students also benefit from living in the
same community as upper-division students who are familiar with the Honors Program
and share similar academic interests and aspirations.
In addition to the numerous social programs offered in this community, students will
benefit from greater interaction with Honors faculty outside of the classroom and
opportunities to participate in special programs designed to enhance academic and
personal success.
Programs and events include:
- The Honors Welcome Dinner: Held during the first week of classes to provide an opportunity for students to meet
and interact with Honors Program faculty and staff, as well as other honors students.
- The First-Year Mentor Program: A mentoring program that assists with the transition to campus life at the University
of Memphis by matching first-year students with an honors faculty member and upper-class
honors students.
- Study Abroad and National Student Exchange Programs: The Study Abroad and National Student Exchange Directors provide workshops to Honors
residents about the many opportunities available in terms of studying abroad or studying
through exchange in the United States and Canada.
- Pizza with the Profs: Pizza party with faculty to learn about opportunities to assist in research projects.
Other common events in the Honors Community include special guest lectures, Honors
student picnic, movie nights, bowling, and game nights.
The Community is open to students of all academic majors who have been admitted to
the Honors Program. For more information about the Honors Program, please contact
the Honors Program Office at (901) 678-2690.
