Resident Advisors must be mature students, and are selected on the basis of leadership
experience, residence in a hall, scholarship, and desire to help residents realize
their opportunities for self – development through group living in the residence halls.
You are responsible for a floor or apartment unit housing approximately 50 residents
and are directly responsible to your Assistant Area Coordinator (AAC).
- Administration of the area
- Responsible for rotating coverage of the hall / complex
- Assist in communicating policies and regulations to residents, preparing reports and
records, and being aware of the general condition and atmosphere of the hall / complex
- Achieve a detailed working knowledge of official housing publications and the Residence
Life Information Brochure / Student Handbook
- Attend hall / complex, area and departmental meetings as announced
- Share responsibility for maintaining the hall / complex and necessary tasks related
thereto
- Communicate daily with your AAC in order to provide uniformity in building operations
- Make contact with parents as students move in 8. Assist in departmental research,
such as surveys, as requested by your AAC
- Work with individual students
- Know students in hall / complex, actively participate in all Residence Life functions,
visit in student’s rooms / apartments and generally build rapport
- Know what campus agencies are available to assist students who need special help
- Assist supervisors in handling discipline cases, counseling problems, and health problems
- Assist in program development
- Participate in your hall / complex council and RHA as directed by your AAC
- Work with individual student officers and fellow staff members to develop, promote,
and implement programming
- Assist with hall / complex and area programming
- Attend all programming activities involving residents of your area. This includes
activities for floor / building, hall / complex, area, and RHA events.
- Present 3 programs per month for your residents ( personal, academic and community
development)
- Attend all RA in – service sessions provided
- Other Responsibilities
- Attend all staff meetings scheduled during the academic year. Attendance is mandatory
and provisions should be made for this time when registering for classes. Therefore
all RAs must keep Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 3:00pm -5:00 p.m. free from
class conflicts and other obligations.
- Must successfully complete the RA class (HIAD 4691) in first full semester of service
- Be in residence for fall and spring staff training, for the semester, and through
6:00pm the day following semester commencement
- Be prepared to respond to any emergency
- Clear overnight absence away from campus with your AAC
- Your Area Coordinator must approve any exceptions to the rule of maintaining 12 credit
hours per semester in writing in concurrence with the Associate Director of Residence
Life. Law students are allowed to meet the minimum registration requirements of the
Law School
- Any additional time commitments that will take you out of the building (any position
in a student organization, student teach, internship, fraternity or sorority, marching
band, varsity sport, etc.) must be approved by your AAC and Area Coordinator with
concurrence by the Associate Director of Residence Life
- Respond to reasonable requests by the Department of Residence Life
- Living on campus is required. A single, furnished room, utilities and local telephone
service are provided. Contracts are for one semester. Employment is contingent upon
job performance
- RAs have an option to work the reception desk a maximum of nine hours a week at current
rate of minimum wage. However, these hours can not be scheduled during duty hours
7pm – 7am.
