Jerry Michel is Professor of Sociology. He received his Ph.D. from the University
of Texas in 1964. His research and teaching interests are in the areas of marriage
and the family, criminology, and future studies. After six years as an assistant and
associate professor at Texas Christian University, he came to the University of Memphis
in 1970.
Dr. Michel served as departmental chair from 1971 to 1983 and as national president
of the sociology honor society, Alpha Kappa Delta, 1984-86. He served in several offices
of the Southwestern Sociological Association and its umbrella organization, the Southwestern
Social Science Association (SSSA), including the presidencies of both. For the past
16 years he has been the Site Selection Director for the SSSA.
Dr. Michel teaches Introductory Sociology and Future Studies.
