2012 Public Health Summer Institute
Tennessee has a new opportunity to enhance the training of our public health workforce!
A new HRSA grant has been awarded to a consortium of universities and public health
agencies to develop a Public Health Training Center, one of only 32 nationwide. East
Tennessee State University’s School of Public Health spearheads this grant, and the
University of Memphis' School of Public Health is a collaborating agency. Other collaborating
agencies include the Tennessee Department of Health; The Tennessee Public Health Association;
the National Association of City and County Health Officers (NACCHO); Meharry Medical
College’s MPH Program; and University of Tennessee’s Department of Public health.
The purpose of the Tennessee Public Health Training Center, named Tennessee LIFEPATH
Long-Distance Internet Facilitated Educational Program for Applied Training in Health), is to provide a home for the collaborative partnership between Tennessee‘s academic
public health training providers and the state‘s public health workforce, and to provide
comprehensive competency-based training for that workforce. The Center is focused
on the identification of workforce training needs; the provision of both academic
and non-academic training to address these needs, and the evaluation of the training
and outcomes. The long-term goal of Tennessee LIFEPATH is to strengthen the technical,
scientific, managerial and leadership competence of Tennessee’s public health workforce.
