On May 13, 1999, The University of Memphis Staff Senate sponsored the First Staff Appreciation Day. The event was held in the ballroom of the University Center. There were 12 vendor booths: Baptist Memorial Health Care, Memphis Area Teachers Credit Union, Safety Services, Environmental Health & Safety, IBM, University Career Associates, University Staff Senate, Omega Travel, Campus Recreation, Sam's Club, IT. The booths were informational as well as service oriented. You could join clubs, register for prizes, get your blood pressure & cholesterol taken, enroll in safety classes, see the latest in informational technology, open a bank account, plan a trip or have a relaxing massage.

Prior to the event there was extensive advertising with colorful informative fliers, a banner across Central Avenue, a sign at the corner of Patterson and Southern, articles/ads in Update, a message at the prompt on The University WebPage and terminal, and a message on telecommunications HOLD line. The event was also promoted by the members of the Staff Senate to their constituents. Before the event there was a definite air of excitement campus wide about the upcoming event. The grand prize was a roundtrip ticket for two anywhere in the continental USA donated by Omega Travel. In addition there was a ThinkPad-IBM laptop computer valued at $3200.00. In addition to these there were over 300 other prizes ranging from free hamburgers to weekend at Wilson World.

There were 1700 staff invited to the event and the turn out was approximately 1200. Staff had to attend to register to win any of the prizes, but did not have to be present to win. Anyone who was not present to receive his or her prize was greeted later that afternoon by the Prize Patrol. Each person attending was given a goodie bag with over a dozen coupons for free items or discounts, a koozie with the Staff Senate Web site address and a booklet from the Staff Senate, listing present senators, issues that have been addressed, and all the vendors whose donations made the day possible. A wonderful bar-b-que dinner, cooked by the "Professors of Pork" with Staff Senate treasurer Larry Mayes as head cook, was served to all.

William Byars, who works in Physical Plant and Planning, won the airline tickets. The IBM computer was awarded to Chris Ratliff, who works in the library.

There was also a logo contest for a Staff Senate logo. There were over 20 entries and the top three were displayed anonymously for voting by the University Staff. Steve Conlee, IT systems, designed the logo selected. Steve received a Cross-Pen/Pencil Set.

There was a good time had by all. We have received many positive e-mail responses and thank you cards. Some lucky winners have personally thanked the donors for their gifts.

In closing, I would personally like to thank my committee and all the senators for their participation in this team project. It was a success and everyone involved should be very proud.
