John stevenson, a Junior Journalism/Advertising major and Emerging Leader from Bartlett,
TN, discusses how the Emerging Leaders program has enriched his college experience.
I chose the University of Memphis because I saw the incredible opportunities for students
looking to receive a quality education while building leadership skills and participating
in a wide variety of student organizations. I also admired the University's connections
with the city of Memphis through internships and networking opportunities.
I currently hold executive positions in Up 'til Dawn, Sigma Chi Fraternity, and the
Society of Professional Journalists. During the summer of 2011, I was a Frosh Camp
counselor as well as a New Student Orientation guide. I also serve as a Tiger Elite
ambassador.
I think the most valuable aspect of the Emerging Leaders program is the training and
real-world preparation it provides. Students are encouraged to lead and make positive
changes in the community after graduation. The program also connects students with
tremendous volunteer opportunities within the city.
Serving as both an Orientation Guide and Frosh Camp Counselor were enlightening and
rewarding experiences. I was not only able to utilize the leadership and communication
skills I developed through the Emerging Leaders program, but I also learned an incredible
amount about myself and how I work best in group-oriented environments.
After graduation, I plan to work in the creative department of an advertising agency.
However, I am open to any opportunity that will allow me to work in a creative environment.
I also hope to attend graduate school in the near future.
