This office only processes licensure requests for the State of Tennessee. Students
who wish to obtain a license from another state must contact the Department of Education
for that state. For a list of state by state education agencies, please refer to this webpage.
Initial Teacher License
This office will verify that you have completed all course requirements and passed
all required Praxis II exams associated with your teaching area for students who are
applying for an initial teaching license in the state of Tennessee.

Undergraduate students are eligible to apply for their teaching license once there
bachelor degree has been conferred on their official transcript and they have passed
all PRAXIS exams which are associated with their teaching area.

Graduate students are eligible to apply for their teaching license once they have
completed all licensure coursework and passed all PRAXIS exams which are associated
with their teaching area. Note: Graduate students are not required to complete the master’s program prior to
applying for their license. Graduate students who hold a Transitional license must teach for at least 1 year
before applying for their license. Three years of teaching at a private institution
is required before applying for a full license

Items Required for Licensure
- Transcripts from all colleges and universities from which credit has been earned.
(These documents must be official; in most instances, transcripts with the words,
“Issued to Student," are considered official if the transcripts have the embossed
seal of the college/university or if the transcripts have the signature of the registrar
affixed.) Associated degree transcripts are not required
- Xerox copy of PRAXIS II test scores which includes the Principles of Learning and Teaching and required specialty
area exams (both the first and second page). Students are required to have their test
scores sent to The University of Memphis (code #1459) and the Tennessee Department
of Education (code # 8190). Your Social Security Number must appear on your score
report.
- Please complete the "Yellow Sheet" and refer to this sheet for instructions on how
to complete the "Licensure Application."
- The "Licensure Application" can be obtained in the Office of Teacher Education and
Student Support Services - Ball Hall 202 or from the Tennessee Department of Education. The top portion of the licensure application must be completed and the rest of the
application must be left blank.
- For students using the "In-Lieu of Student Teaching Applicantion" must also submit a "Verification of Work Experience" form from your school district
confirming length of service.
Adding An Endorsement To An Existing License
A person who is a licensed teacher in Tennessee and wishes to add another endorsement
to the initial license should contact Mary Lanier, Teacher Licensure Coordinator at
901-678-4309 for more information. A person who is a licensed teacher in Tennessee
and wishes to add another endorsement to their initial license should submit the items
listed above. It is not necessary for you to resubmit your undergraduate transcript.
