Robert A. Hetherington holds degrees from The College of Wooster and Northwestern University. He joined the University of Memphis in 1997 as Chair of the Department of Theatre & Dance and supervisor of the graduate directing program.



His teaching specialties are in the areas of directing, theatre history and dramatic literature. His work at The Stratford Festival of Canada has won him two Tyrone Guthrie Awards, and he is a frequent essayist for both Stratford and The Shaw Festivals in Canada.  He was founding resident director of The Human Race Theatre, an Equity company in Dayton, OH. He is a member of the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers, a national labor union.  He has received both the College of Communication and Fine Arts Creative Achievement Award, and the Alumni Award of Creative Achievement.  He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa.
