posterThe University of Memphis Department of Theatre & Dance confronts the ethical responsibilities and consequences of scientific advancement in its upcoming production The Physicists adapted by Jack Thorne from Friedrich Dürrenmatt's original play. Directed by faculty member Robert Hetherington, this satiric comedy showcases the talents of many young artists as well as those of faculty member Sarah Brown (previously seen in Hayfever) as she heads up the cast as famed psychiatrist Fräulein Doctor Mathilde Von Zahnd. Shows run Friday and Saturday, Oct. 3 and 4, 2014 and Monday-Saturday, Oct. 6-11 at 7:30 p.m.
Dürrenmatt's plays are parables about the modern world ruled by madmen, and like its cousin the Cold War comedy Dr. Strangelove, the very existence of the planet is at stake. In this thriller three physicists locked in an asylum are not what they appear to be, and a hunchbacked spinster psychiatrist holds the fate of the planet in her twisted fist. As Edward Snowden's weaponization of knowledge has recently instructed us, sometimes grotesque comedy becomes a horrible nightmare.
