Setting up Personal Webspace

Along with using UMdrive as personal file space, you can also use UMdrive to house your personal web pages.

The nature of UMdrive

Because of the nature of UMdrive, in reality, any document that you share to the public is a web page. Visitors can view a public file by entering the following URL in a web browser:

http://umdrive.memphis.edu/yourusername/path1/path2/filename

Where yourusername is your PostOffice username, filename is the name of the file, and /path1/path2/ is the path to the file.

For instance, if your PostOffice username were cookie, and then if you created--and made public--a folder called monsters, and then placed a file called lochness.html within the monsters folder, the URL that visitors would use to view lochness.html would be:

http://umdrive.memphis.edu/cookie/monsters/lochness.html

The umpeople mapping

Although you can make any file on your UMdrive a web page, ITD has created a special mapping that, if you choose to use it, will allow visitors to access your website using the following URL:

http://umpeople.memphis.edu/yourusername

Where yourusername is your PostOffice username.

Note: To avoid the need to reference the homepage name in the link (http://umpeople.memphis.edu/yourusername/homepage.html), we recommend you save your homepage as index.html (http://umpeople.memphis.edu/yourusername/index.html). This will enable you to use the simple webpage reference as listed: http://umpeople.memphis.edu/yourusername/.

To use this mapping, you will need to create a folder called www on the root of your UMdrive and then share the folder to the general public. To do this, follow the steps below:

  1. Log into UMdrive.

  2. With the root folder displayed, click the New Directory icon at the top of the window. The system displays the following form:

  3. Enter www in the Directory Name field, and then click the OK button. The system creates the new folder and then redisplays the contents of the root folder.

  4. Find the new www folder in the listing. Click the share icon, which is three columns to the right of the folder name. The system displays the following information:

  5. Click the word Change. The system displays the following form:

  6. In the Read column, set the option for Public to Yes, and then click the Apply Now button.

You can now place HTML documents within the folder.
