Students should take time to settle into their new classes and make sure they get the books and supplies they need to succeed during this semester in college. College students experience much greater freedom than in high school. However, they are also held more accountable for their actions and decisions. Rarely does a professor ask twice for assignments or question absences. With an increased opportunity for distractions, time management becomes more important. Angie has been a long-time advisor for the Student Activities Council, but is currently transitioning to focus primarily on Community Service programs and the Student Event Allocations process. In her previous work with Community Service programs, Angie helped to revive the Alternative Spring Break program, now having completed its 10th consecutive year of community service trips, and is working to expand the program. She also initiated the creation of Students Advocating Service (SAS), a student organization dedicated to providing community service opportunities for the campus community. SAS is now entering its 12th year and sponsors a monthly Service on Saturday opportunity, as well as three weekly community service opportunities for students, staff, and faculty. Angie also serves as one of the advisors for Frosh Camp and organizes the Frosh Frenzy program, a freshman tradition at the first home football game. Student Spotlight
This program is unique in that students have the opportunity to teach starting with the first course, Step 1. Students begin their field experience in an elementary classroom, move to a middle school, and then they teach in a high school. Ali loves the fact that "they start us small and let us build our confidence before we get to the high school students". In addition to the program there is also the Tigers Teach Student Society, T2S2, and the Tiger Learning Community. T2S2 is open to all students enrolled in the program. The student society hosts social events, tutoring opportunities, and service projects. The first service project for Fall 12 is a book drive on September 5 in the University Center for Hanley Elementary. The Tiger Learning Community is a mentor program where new students are paired with older students of the same major to assist the new students with writing lesson plans, discussing classes, or becoming involved in campus events. According to Ali Tigers Teach is a wonderful program that offers a vast amount of opportunities. Tigers Teach accepts all STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) majors. Even if students do not want to pursue a teaching license they can gain communication skills, effective presentation techniques, and knowledge of learning styles. This information assists students in being productive and successful while at the University By completing the entire program students can receive a teaching license for grades 7-12. With a STEM degree and a teaching license students are prepared for multiple employment opportunities upon graduation. General NewsNew U of M Students Will Begin College Adventure at Convocation Aug. 27th. New students at the University of Memphis will start their college adventure this year with music, school spirit, encouragement, and information. It's all part of New Student Convocation, set for Monday, Aug. 27, at 2:15 p.m. in the Michael D. Rose Theatre. Read more... Campus Card Office. If you need to add money to your student's Tiger Funds or Dining Dollars visit our website and select Visitor Access. All you need to know is their University user name and date of birth! Tiger Funds can be used to make purchases in the University Bookstore or to purchase food at any of our dining and vending locations. Dining Dollars can only be used to purchase food on campus in any of our dining facilities, at our vending locations, or in the University Bookstore Café. University of Memphis Study Abroad Fair. Study abroad gives students a chance to obtain inspiration for a future career, learn cross-cultural skills, enhance their resume, gain a global perspective, and network and make new friends! Political Perspectives Centennial Luncheon. Students have a unique opportunity to hear from James Carville, CNN contributor, on Friday, September 14 at 1:30 p.m after the Political Perspective Centennial Luncheon. Sponsored by the Student Government Association with funds from student activity fees, Political Perspectives Q & A with James Carville is FREE for U of M students. Seating will be on "first-come" basis and admission is subject to room capacity regulations. Read more... The Future is Now. To get the most out of their college experience, students have to remember a lot along the way. Should they study abroad? When should they start thinking about an internship? Are they on track to graduate on time? Just a few quick clicks will help them stay on top of all of the important deadlines in the future. For those parents who have students on the Lambuth Campus, we will soon have new resources on our website just for you. The UofM Lambuth website is a great resource or please feel free to contact us with your questions. Parent Giving. Our annual fundraising campaign will begin soon. If you a receive a call, please consider making a donation to the Parent Fund. With the donation you can honor your student or anyone else. Our Parent Fund helps to continue our Parent Services we bring to you. Registrar's OfficeFall registration has been open for all students since April 11. Please remind your students that they must be advised before they can register; the registration system will not allow a degree-seeking student to register if he or she has not been cleared by an advisor. The last day of regular registration is August 24. Students who register after this date will be subject to late registration and late payment fees. Encourage your students to print and review their class schedules before their first day of classes. Financial Aid OfficeIncoming freshmen and continuing students who have already completed their 2012-2013 FAFSA may have already been awarded and/or missing information may be preventing award. They should check under Financial Aid Requirements for the Aid Year 2012-2013 to determine if additional forms/documents are needed. To access award information, please follow the steps listed below.
Students can still apply for federal financial aid by completing the 2012-2013 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Students who may qualify for the HOPE Lottery Scholarship must also complete the FAFSA by September 1, 2012 to receive the Fall award. Educational Support ProgramUniversity of Memphis Tutoring @ ESP welcomes all students back to the University of Memphis for the 2012-2013 school year. Tutors are available at ten (10) different learning centers across the main and satellite campuses. The main campus learning centers include the following: The Academic Enhancement Center, Business Learning Center, English Learning Center, Math Learning Center, and Science Learning Center. Also on the main campus, ESP provides evening tutoring at learning centers in both the Richardson Towers and the Living Learning Complex. Satellite learning centers are located at the Collierville, Millington, and Lambuth locations. Your student might want to get a jump start on the semester by visiting the Academic Enhancement Center, located in 207 Mitchell. Student Leadership and InvolvementStudent Leadership and Involvement is ready to kick off the fall semester with many fun and engaging programs. We want to highlight and ask you to encourage your son or daughter to join our Tiger Leadership Institute and Professional Connections programs or one of our many other activities. Tiger Leadership Institute is an eight week program that provides participants with leadership and success skills. Level I is designed especially for new students and addresses personal awareness and self-management through exciting activities and discussion. Professional Connections is a great experience for all students looking to expand their professional network. Participants will hear real life perspectives on what it means to be a leader and experiences from members of specific professions. Campus RecreationThe Campus Recreation Intramural Services staff hopes your students will have a wonderful school year, and we are here to help them achieve that by offering excellent facilities, programs, and services that promote wellness and relieve stress. Any student enrolled in six or more hours has free access to our Student and Recreation Center. We offer a wide array of state-of-the-art equipment, including brand-new cardio equipment, as well as tennis, basketball, racquetball, table tennis, and golf courts; a new rowing studio; weight room; fitness studio; indoor and outdoor pools; sauna, whirlpool, and steam room; and free group fitness classes, including Yoga, Zumba, Cycle, and much more. Full-time students are also invited to enroll in a Student Household Membership, through which they may sponsor one adult who lives in the same household as the student, as well as any children aged 21 or younger who are in the student's custody. Memphis Tigers Partner with Memphis City Schools to Collect 10,000 Books on September 1st. The Memphis Tigers PAWS (Preparing Athletes for Winning Success) program announced a goal to collect 10,000 books at the Tigers' first football game on Sept. 1. The campaign has been termed "10,000 Books from Tiger Fans." All books collected will be donated to seven Memphis City Schools deemed "Innovation Zone" schools.
