Lets get pUMped!!!!!
August is a very important time of the year. Student should take time to settle into
their new classes and make sure they get the books and supplies they need to succeed
during this semester in college.
College students experience much greater freedom than in high school. However, they
are also held more accountable for their actions and decisions. Rarely does a professor
ask twice for assignments or question absences. With an increased opportunity for
distractions, time management becomes more important. Encourage your student to be
responsible for his or her education. There is no better time than now to get your
student off to a good start.
What Parents Can Do...
- Encourage your student to always go to class, and to use a day planner to keep up
with assignments. Students can get a free planner at the beginning of each semester
with their student ID in the University Center.
- Remind them that attending study groups can be a fun and interactive way to get prepared.
- Let your student know that professors are available during their office hours, and
they are there to help.
- If your student lives away from home, be understanding when he or she feels overwhelmed
or homesick. Encourage your student to spend a month or more acclimating to college
before returning home for the weekend.

Don't Let Your Student Get Locked Out!
On July 1, 2013, a new State of Tennessee law took effect. The law requires all new
students under the age of 22 who will be living in a University of Memphis residence
to be immunized against meningococcal disease on or after their 16th birthday and
provide proof of receiving the immunization before moving into their residence. That
means your student will not be allowed to move into their dorm room unless their vaccination
documentation has been registered with Student Health Services! Click here for the Immunization Form and instructions.
Please note that you may have submitted your student's proof of Meningitis record
before the state clarified that the vaccine had to have been received on or after
their 16th birthday. Please ensure that your student has submitted proof of the Meningitis
vaccination that meets this criteria.
Meningococcal meningitis is a rare but serious infection. It causes inflammation of
the membranes that cover the brain and spinal cord. Each year, approximately 1,000
people in the U.S. get meningococcal disease, which includes meningitis and septicemia
(blood infection). Meningococcal meningitis can be fatal or cause great harm without
prompt treatment. Meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MCV4) -- Menactra or Menveo, protect
young adults against meningitis. The vaccination is available at many health care
provider's offices and the Public Health Department.
For additional information about meningitis click here and here.
Your Student Health Services will post any news received about this new law on their
web site, Facebook: UofMSTUDENTHEALTH or Twitter: @Healthy_Tigers.
For questions or more information, contact Student Health Services via email at firstname.lastname@example.org or via phone at 901.678.2287.
